How often should a Minnesota chimney be swept?
The national fire code (NFPA 211) calls for an inspection every year, and a sweep whenever deposits have built up. If you burn most winter evenings or rely on a woodstove for heat, expect to need a sweep every year, sometimes mid-season too.
Why is my brick crumbling after winter?
Freeze-thaw. Moisture gets into the brick and joints, turns to ice, swells and breaks the surface apart. Fixing the crown, cap and flashing that let the water in, then repointing and replacing damaged brick, stops the cycle.
Can you do chimney work in the winter?
Sweeps, inspections, caps and liners happen all year. Mortar and crown repairs need days warm enough for mortar to cure, or cold-weather methods, so we plan those around the forecast.
Why does my chimney leak every spring?
Usually ice dams pushing meltwater under worn flashing, a cracked crown, or bare brick soaking up water. We find the source, fix it, and can add a cricket behind wide chimneys so snow doesn't pile up.
Do you install wood stove inserts and liners?
Yes. We size and fit stainless flue liners to wood and gas inserts, free-standing stoves and furnace flues.
Should I get the chimney inspected before buying a house?
It's a good idea. NFPA 211 recommends a Level 2 inspection, with a camera through the whole flue, whenever a property changes hands.
